ABOUT THE KEY WEST NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Established in 190 8, the Key West NWR consists of 400,000 acres of land and sea west of Key West, FL. It is accessible only by boat. The Refuge includes mostly mangrove islands, with a few sandy beaches and dunes that are critical nesting habitat for endangered sea turtles. Other habitat includes saltmarsh and coastal berm hammocks, plus sea grass and coral reef communities. The NWR, along with the Great White Heron Refuge, represents the last of the offshore islands in the lower Florida Keys available as critical nesting, roosting, wading and loafing habitat to over 250 avian species particularily wading birds.KAYAK THE SPECTACULAR NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Your trip begins with a smooth ride deep into the backcountry of the Florida Keys. Your guide will then l ead you on a fascinating journey through the mangrove islands. Here we can find hundreds of species of marine and bird life. Herons, brown pelicans, ospreys and bald eagles nest here. Small sharks, sea rays and tropical fish live in the clear, calm waters. Sea kayaking is the only way to experience this undisturbed natural environment. Anyone, from first-timer to expert, will enjoy this quiet and relaxing tour.
